Established in 1997, SPYF supports communities to flourish & reduces the effects of poverty in Blackhill and surrounding areas. Shaped by decades of listening to local people, our work is delivered through four strands: the SPYF Molendinar Community Centre, On Bikes, Blackhill’s Growing & Youthwork. Across these areas, we supported over 5,000 people last year.
Opened in 2023, the SPYF Molendinar Community Centre received over 32,000 visits in 2025. It is a hub providing support services, activities & free soup.
On Bikes removes barriers to cycling by providing free bikes, building cycling skills & developing safer infrastructure. Working with HMP Barlinnie, it distributed over 2,000 refurbished bikes for free in 2025.
Blackhill’s Growing addresses food poverty through community growing, school & nursery workshops, a weekly community meal for 40–50 people & a pantry supporting around 35 households each week.
Youthwork has been central to SPYF for almost 30 years. We provide youth clubs four nights a week, school programmes, international exchanges & holiday clubs for up to 80 children each day, including hot meals. Blackhill was once at the heart of the violence affecting Glasgow when the city was labelled the “murder capital of Europe.” Through sustained, relationship-based youthwork, recorded violence within our youth provision has reduced to zero over the past decade.
Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) builds on this achievement. MVP is a peer education & leadership programme empowering young people to recognise gender-based violence, challenge harmful attitudes & intervene safely as active bystanders. SPYF has trained over 160 peer educators across our community to lead learning with their peers, creating a culture of equality, respect & shared responsibility. SPYF staff can train & support schools & community organisations to implement and embed MVP across education & community settings.
