Illustrious Lab is an independent research and design platform exploring how culture, creativity and innovation can contribute to more inclusive and sustainable futures. It connects practice-led research with creative and participatory approaches across design, education, cultural heritage, digital cultures and sustainability.

The Lab develops interdisciplinary projects with researchers, universities, cultural and educational organisations, communities, children, young people and adults. Its work explores how creative environments, play, making, storytelling and digital cultures can support learning, participation and the development of diverse skills across different ages and contexts.

A particular focus is placed on meaningful participation and co-creation: creating conditions in which participants can contribute their own knowledge, perspectives and experiences rather than being positioned only as recipients of knowledge. Areas of work include child- and adult-centred learning, textile and clothing heritage, sustainable craft, digital cultures, Indigenous and local knowledge, and youth engagement.

Illustrious Lab understands inclusion as a transversal principle involving access, representation, accessibility, equity and meaningful involvement. Its projects therefore consider not only who can access a learning or cultural experience, but also whose knowledge is represented, which forms of knowledge and skills are recognised, and how participants can influence processes and outcomes.

Through its interdisciplinary and practice-led approach, the Lab develops creative methodologies, educational resources and participatory processes that connect research and practice.
